A New Zealander educated at the University of Otago and the Australian National University, Colin Newbury has held teaching positions in West Africa and visiting Professorships at Duke University, the University of Hawaii, the Hoover Institution for War and Peace, and the University of the Pacific at Noumea, New Caledonia. Formerly university lecturer in commonwealth history, Oxford University, he is an emeritus fellow of Linacre College. His major publications include five monographs and editions on West Africa and South African history, two on the Pacific and one on the theory and practice of imperial relations with indigenous societies.
