Nonetheless, as Finnegan’s careful readings reveal, new western narratives, whether taking the form of autobiography, fiction, or conventional history, often wind up perpetuating older frameworks. Finnegan’s work is valuable for its critical analysis but its ultimate importance lies in the alternative stories it uncovers and the space it affords them. These stories point the way toward a truer understanding of this part of the world.
