Acknowledgments

In a book arguing about the inconsistencies of memory, I am bound to prove my argument by forgetting all of the people who were instrumental in putting this book together. However, there are those whose guidance I will never forget. Many thanks to Margaret Whitt, Clark Davis, Barbara Wilcots and, most especially, Eric Gould, whose enthusiasm has been invaluable over the years. I also cannot forget the direction provided by Elizabeth Wolf in the early stages of this project, as well as Gerald Graff, whose continued support has been an inspiration to me. Many thanks also to Stuart Mills and Cynthia Kuhn who provided encouragement and feedback, as well as Claudia Stokes and Rob Davidson, who allowed me to present some of the ideas in this book to the William Dean Howells Society panels at the American Literature Association. Finally, to my parents and entire family, who have been unflagging in their support, even when I was at my crankiest.

But most importantly, I can never forget the love and patience of my wife Wendy, who never let me forget why I was writing this.
