Professor Arries holds a University Chair for Teaching Excellence and has received a Pew National Fellowship for Carnegie Scholars. He has published extensively in the field of service-learning and Hispanic studies as well as taught Spanish and worked effectively with diverse student populations.

Monica D. Griffin, Sharpe Community Partnership Program Director

Monica D. Griffin received her BA in English and sociology from the College of William and Mary (’88) and her MA and PhD in sociology from the University of Virginia. Monica taught in the college’s Department of Sociology for 6 years (1995–2001) as an assistant professor, specializing in culture studies, theory, and race–class–gender inequality. She spent the last year coordinating a health program for the Hampton and Peninsula health districts and now returns to the College of William and Mary as the director of the Sharpe Community Partnership Program. She teaches the Sharpe freshman seminar course Public Health in the college’s Department of Sociology.

Christopher Howard, David D. and Carolyn B. Wakefield Associate Professor of Government

Professor Christopher Howard graduated summa cum laude from Duke University in 1983 with a BA degree in history. He later earned his MS (1990) and PhD (1993) degrees in political science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Christopher has taught at the college since 1993. His primary interests are in American politics and public policy, particularly social policy.
