In chapter 2, the origins of dance in the university, and the legacies of the three women most responsible for shepherding this progress between the years 1917 and 1967 are discussed. Chapter 3 includes remembrances of influential pioneers of dance education many readers may not be familiar with. Chapter 4 deals with legacy and personal challenge as dance students face obstacles in their training and in their lives. These stories are examples of how resilient and focused dancers often are in pursuit of their life’s passion. Chapter 5 focuses on the legacy of interactions between people. Here, three essays reflect on the diverse ways in which we are sustained, and sustain one another through our shared love of the discipline. In chapter 6, I illustrate the legacy of teaching and learning in dance by presenting a contemporary pedagogy for teaching composition that, I think, rekindles attention to the idea that our teaching is complex; process oriented, and must involve sophisticated understandings of human creativity, psychology and the nature of choice. Chapter 7 includes two contemporary interviews with dance educators discussing a wide range of issues, all of which are centered on how legacy informs our present status and our future challenges. Chapter 8 concludes this volume with ruminations on the preceding text and future directions.
