In the twentieth century, dance was relocated on the cultural map as art and education by intrepid, missionary-like converts who carried their conviction that learning in and through dance meant something out into the educational world. These women (and some men) were often referred to as pioneers, and the term was an apt descriptor for their lives and their work. The stories of their emergent values and their contributions to defining and creating the world we presently inhabit are told with admiration and respect. Sometimes appreciated, often misunderstood but always ready to convert the masses, the dance educators who blazed the landscape we occupy today were a very tenacious bunch.
