The matriarchs of dance in higher education were a fierce lot––in the male world of academia, they charmed, coerced, entertained, and wrestled with the Cartesians until they were successful in building beehives of visions, hopes, deep practices, and innovative ideas. I want my students to know what worked and what didn’t, because they too, are going to be pioneers. It is the nature of the art form that we are always being pushed from behind and above, into uncharted waters. Tom Hagood has given us the stories that can carry the next generation forward, into the next great era.
