During the years of learning and writing, my energy was nourished by the delight and pride over my modest accomplishments felt and expressed by my father, Neal III, and siblings, Neal IV and Kathy. My perseverance was sustained by the memory of my mother, who before her passing said, “I always knew you were smart,” and my grandmother, who had the foresight to refer to her inquisitive little grandson as “professor.” I am morally required to confess that the term was not always intended as a compliment.
Finally, I am much obliged to the staff at Cambria Press for their genial stewardship of the publishing process. They cracked the whip with steady, gentle hands.
