Acknowledgments
This book started as an initiative of the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA), Dakar, Senegal, and the Development Policy Management Forum (DPMF), Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In 2004 the two organizations convened an international conference on the theme of the book: The African Union and New Strategies for Development in Africa. After the conference, discussions commenced on the publication of the proceedings. Initial review of the papers revealed that there were important gaps to be filled; hence, some new papers were commissioned from leading scholars in the respective areas. In all, eight new papers were commissioned. The production of those papers and the constant revision of the accepted papers from the conference took time. Authors had to revise their papers three times to update and keep up with the ever-changing currents at the African Union and the regional space in Africa. We would like to thank, most sincerely, all the contributors to the book, who tolerated our constant “harassment.” We hope the “harassment” has been a worthy service in the pan-African cause.
