In chapter 7, we examine the characteristics of two specific types of primary caregivers––spouses and children––and determine how these characteristics affect the amount of care that they provided. Finally, in chapter 8, we summarize the findings and outline policy implications. Using our findings as a springboard, we also outline a research agenda that will further advance our understanding of the needs of people in late middle age.
