| AIC | African-Initiated Churches or African Indigenous Churches. These independent congregations and, sometimes, denominations—many of which were founded in the twentieth century although congregations continue to be founded—share many aspects with the Fifohazana movement, and the Fifohazana has often been compared to the AIC’s. |
| AREMA | This is an acronym that has had a number of lives. It was first known from 1975 as the Antoky ny Revolisiona Malagasy in Malagasy, or the Avant-garde de la révolution Malgache in French. Both of these can be translated “Vanguard of the Malagasy Revolution.” In 1990 the acronym also took on the meaning Andry sy Riana Enti-Manavotra an’i Madagasikara in Malagasy, which translated means “pillar and structure for the salvation of Madagascar.” |
