Acknowledgments

My first acknowledgment must be to the twenty-four retired women teachers who so generously shared their stories. Without them, the study on which this book is based would have been impossible. My thanks also to the volunteer interviewers who contributed to the creation of the Claremont Cameos Archive.

The completion of the project would also have been impossible without the intellectual stimulation, humour, nurturing skills, and support I have received from my supervisor, Professor Tom O’Donoghue. Tom provided frequent and timely advice about the writing of the thesis on which this book is based, and I always knew that if my inspiration was flagging, Tom’s was not. Go raibh maith agat.

Friends and colleagues, too many to name, have been of invaluable support and encouragement. In particular, I wish to acknowledge my former colleague Professor Lynne Hunt who first proposed we should gather oral histories of women graduates of Claremont Teachers’ College in 1990, and who had a special talent for making sure I kept my focus. My dearest friends Jacqui and Dot are to be thanked for keeping their faith in my ability to complete the task.
