Introduction

We live in a mediated world where violence, through the horrors of war, real or imagined terrorist atrocities, and so-called natural disasters, dictates and shapes both our ontological essence and our behavior based on fear. Child abduction and pedophilia encapsulate this fear, as they threaten the very foundation of our future, the hope of the next generation. The media and governments have a vested interest in stage managing each moment of horror, and shaping the way we perceive and react to events, and this creation of a culture of horror and fear grows, along with the power of media culture and the technology of observation.
