There are many ways in which these can be implemented that exacerbate social tension and detract from social cohesion. To design examination systems well, however, may have the opposite effect. Good examination design can lead to social cohesion, it can help choose talent fairly, it can engender trust in public institutions, and it can give confidence in the general conduct of the public school system.
