Language Notes

The default language for this book is British English, but recognised regional variants (viz., American, Australian and Canadian) have been incorporated. The spellings of words have accordingly not been standardised—for instance, programme occurs in some chapters and program in others. In a similar vein, hyphenation for words such as ‘on-going’ and ‘post-secondary’ has not been standardised where both forms of the word are in widespread use.

French is recognised as a universal language in this work and the spellings of French entities such as the Baccalauréat and the collège have not been anglicised. In the case of the first of these, it is noteworthy that the anglicised ‘Baccalaureate’ is a recognised entity in its own right and so both spellings appear (e.g. a student in some countries may enter for either the French Baccalauréat or the International Baccalaureate).

The term examination is used in the collective sense (e.g., the Higher School Certificate examination) as well as in its simple singular and plural senses (e.g., the subject examinations which make up the HSC).
