Acknowledgements

So many people contributed to the researching and writing of this book. First, I must acknowledge my wife Susan Childs and my long-time friend Robert Mahler, two people whose understanding, love, and support lent me strength to continue. In particular, Susan's encouragement was made all the more tangible by her consenting to read countless early drafts, always attentive to the most minor changes (which I, in my writer's pride, deemed “improvements”).

I must also remember my son Cameron who, without complaint, accompanied me on the travels that were necessary for me to complete this study; without a murmur of protest. While I researched at the nearby Gaelic college Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, Cameron endured fishing off the pier at Ardmore on the Isle of Skye, riding heavy Highland horses through the countryside of the Sleat, and boating in the sound between the “winged isle” and an tìr mòr na h-Alba (the great land of Scotland).
