Acknowledgements
Most of the essays in this collection were developed from papers delivered at the workshop, “Islam and Democracy in Asia,” held on March 13–14, 2008, at the University of Louisville, Louisville, Kentucky, in the United States of America. As the local host, the Center for Asian Democracy at the University of Louisville provided funds to ensure the success of the workshop. My assistants, Stacey A. Schoen and Christy L. Rhodes, provided valuable support for both the workshop and the book. I am also indebted to the anonymous referees whose most valuable comments were extremely helpful for the successful completion of the book.
