illustrated in plate 6, has all of the features of such a pump. Sectional cast-iron pipe extends the pump barrel downward into the well, and the long handle gives extra leverage to make the work of lifting the water somewhat easier. The timber, to which the pump is bolted with a stirrup clip, may well be the remains of an earlier wood-encased lead pump.
