Virtually all sites that are included in this study have been recorded as a numbered flag on an outline map of Ireland. The flag number corresponds to a big house site name in an alphabetic list below the map. Following the house name is the county in which it is situated, the date when it was visited (if applicable), and a six-figure Irish National Grid reference obtained at the site from a global-positioning device.10 Other sites not visited but included in the discussion have either six- or four-figure grid references derived from various maps. Technological items associated with the house have been given distinguishing lower-case letter extensions to the house flag number. Where possible, the grid references for these have been recorded in the list, since many were remote from the big house concerned and, due to vegetation growth or human disturbances, were often concealed from view. Most chapters, and some chapter sections, have chronologies in tabular form of some of the more important or interesting big house installations included in the following text. These chronologies include the flag numbers for the relevant sites. Other sites incorporated in the text but not listed in the chronologies have their flag number in an endnote. The reference map of big house technology sites is included in appendix A.
