Scandal on Planet Blagojevich

The outcry that greeted revelations of Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich's failed attempt to cash in on the appointment of a senator to succeed Barack Obama might easily be seen as an overreaction. In the end, even though conversations about “contributions” from the eventual appointee did take place,1 the seat was not actually sold. The governor was expeditiously removed from office on charges relating to the attempted sale and other abuses and faces trial in federal court in 2010. The appointed senator has announced he will not run for a full term.2 Blagojevich's departure, arguably, was bad news only for a few late-night comedians.
