On April 12, 2007, thirty Step It Up events were scheduled for Texas, the second-largest state (both in terms of space and human population) in the United States. On April 14, only fourteen of the thirty took place. In this chapter, we explore three of the SIU events in Texas to discover how identity and myth may enable successful organizers of social movements to reach diverse audiences and motivate them to action.
