The idea for this book emerged through conversations between three friends. In January 2007, Leah had the idea to write an academic article that would reflect on the recently announced Step It Up (SIU) “do-it-yourself” movement. She wanted to do more than a case study of one SIU rally in one location; a meaningful analysis of SIU necessitated consideration of several rallies across the country. Leah took her idea to Danielle, who was immediately interested, and Leah and Danielle starting brainstorming people who might also be supportive of this article idea. Soon after this conversation, Danielle pitched the idea to Tarla on their way to a dinner meeting. Tarla was also immediately interested and quickly raised the stakes by suggesting that what we had was not just a journal article but an edited book. In addition to emerging through friendship, this book also emerged through our shared desire to do something about the climate crisis and to engage in praxis-based research (see Endres, Sprain, and Peterson 2008). And so, the three of us undertook this project.
