I would like to express my gratitude to the scholars who have trained and mentored me in my academic path, especially Professors Judith Innes, Michael Teitz, and Michel Laguerre at UC Berkeley. The breadth and depth of their knowledge shaped both my research strategy and my project. Dr. Innes has both inspired and supported my development as a planner and a planning researcher. For her active commitment to my growth and progress, I am ever grateful. I'd like to thank Professor Isao Fujimoto, who has been my teacher and mentor since I was an undergraduate at UC Davis. He taught me many important lessons, including this: “If you're ever looking for an answer, start in your backyard.” That is what I have done in this book. In addition, I am grateful for the interest and support Iowa State University has shown in my research and this work.
Finally, I'm grateful to the staff of Cambria Press for their professionalism, efficiency, editorial support, and academic rigor.
