The Price of Failure
Future Directions for the Israeli-Palestinian Peace Process

I would like to begin this discussion with a puzzle that informs the collection of essays in this book. It is not only the reason for this volume but the dilemma confronting all who currently search for an equitable solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The dilemma can be framed very clearly. On the one hand, not only is there virtually an international consensus on a just and lasting two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but there is also a majority in both Israel and Palestine for such a vision. In other words, in broad circles, the subtext has been clear for some time.
