Introduction
Life skills in the 21st century not only integrate science and technology but also the role these knowledge systems play in citizenship education. The role of science education in the 21st century will be to successfully prepare students for active participation in democratic societies. Therefore, the challenge for science education will be to find successful ways to integrate content, pedagogy, and citizenship education. Additionally, science education will need to find ways to prepare tomorrow's citizens to participate and make decisions about conflicting issues and policies influenced by science, technology, and sustainability issues. Designing science education using sociocultural perspectives allows students to become cognizant of citizenship issues so that students are better prepared to meaningfully participate in these conversations. Existing literature on integrating sociocultural perspectives in the school science curriculum includes context-based science, connected science, contextualized science, and socioscientific issues (SSI).
