Nor have I identified all the authors of articles, as many lesser-known journalists used pennames that are hard to track. Some men assumed feminine pennames to have their writing published in women's journals. While I present in this book is not an exhaustive study of women's periodicals, it is nevertheless a broad study on a manageable scale. It is my hope that the book serves the purpose of paozhuan yinyu—throwing out a piece of brick with the goal of getting back a piece of jade. I expect that more scholars will study Chinese women's periodicals and share their refined scholarship.
