When writing this book, we faced all the usual challenges of writing a book. Nevertheless, we had the support of our friends, colleagues, and loved ones. We extend our appreciation to the Central Statistical Organization in Yemen for giving us permission to use the Yemen Demographic and Maternal and Child Health Survey data, and Macro International, Inc., Maryland (now called ICF Macro), for providing the data. This book and other publications on Yemen by us would not have been possible without their support. We have published a different version of chapter 3 in 2004 and 2006 (Sunil & Pillai, 2004, 2006); also, chapter 5 is a revised version of an article we published in 2006 (Pillai & Sunil, 2006).
