Chapter 2

Background AND Theoretical Development

In line with the major studies on reproductive health, we review the related literature in three sections: measures of fertility decline, major social and structural theories of fertility, and major economic theories of fertility. In the first section, we present a review of major studies on different measures of fertility, which is followed by a discussion of general fertility theories. In the second section, we provide an overview of studies that have used major economic theories of fertility, and in the third section we include studies that emphasize the noneconomic framework to explain fertility change. However, studies have seldom referred to fertility theories to explain reproductive health, even though reproductive health is considered an extension of fertility.
