Some of us live in a world of possibilities mostly brought about by mass education, science, and technology. For most people, the prospects of good health and material comfort are a distant dream. If this is true in general, then it is especially the case for a large proportion of women in developing countries. The disadvantages of poverty and ill health among women are passed on from one generation to the next. Even during the course of reproduction, poor women face several threats to their physical and mental well-being. Although these disadvantages have been well chronicled in most societies, not much is known about reproductive health in many poor Arab countries. With the exception of a few rich Arab countries such as Saudi Arabia, the state of reproductive health among women in Arab states has hardly been investigated.
