I am indebted to the Macmillan Brown Centre for Pacific Studies, formerly under the direction of Dr. Ueantabo Neemia-Mackenzie, at Canterbury University, New Zealand, for allowing me to take up a visiting scholarship in 1999 and explore the ideas and Pacific materials on which much of this book is based.
