As a Taiwanese scholar for most of my career, my interest in Australian media studies originally came from a brief training program offered by Griffith University in 1998. This intensive program of Australian studies gave me an overall understanding of Australian literature, arts, films and politics. David Carter, Wayne Hudson and Stephen Crofts of Griffith University introduced me to the field of Australian studies. Among them, Stephen was assigned as my program supervisor and was influential in orienting me to study Australian documentary films.

I am greatly indebted to Philip Bell, the professor of the School of Media, Film and Theatre of the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia. Philip not only effectively directed me on formulating research questions and substantive issues of this book but also constantly provided me stimulating and insightful ideas.
