Arabic Transliteration

This book utilised Brill's method for Arabic transliteration as found in its Encyclopaedia of Islam Three.2 Please refer to the table and explanatory notes below.

  • no word-initial hamzas (e.g., al-amr)
  • no sun letters (al-urf-l-shamsiyya)
  • elision of al-, according to the rules of classical Arabic (e.g., wa-l-kitb, f l-masjid, Muy l-Dn, bi-l-kitb, but lil-masjid)
  • compound names with Allh were generally written as one word (e.g., ‘Abdullh)
  • other compound names were written as two words (e.g., ‘Abd al-Ramn)
