The University Scene

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland has more than 100 higher education institutions with university status: England has 90, Scotland has 14, Wales has 3, and Northern Ireland has 2. These include ‘federal’ universities such as the University of London (comprising 19 self-governing Colleges) and the University of Wales (comprising 9 Accredited Institutions), which have central administrations that support activities covering academic matters, finance, human resources, governance and the estate administration. In addition to the universities, there are a further 169 higher education institutions that do not meet the criteria for university status and therefore do not award their own degrees. These institutions generally provide courses leading to externally awarded qualifications. These include vocational higher education qualifications such as Higher National Certificates (HNCs) and Higher National Diplomas (HNDs), qualifications approved or accredited by
