America, home of the best-known ‘separate’ test of all, the SAT, because the most striking development of recent decades has been the explosive growth in individual subject-based ‘Advanced Placement Examinations’. Students take these because they are important in applying to prestigious institutions and courses; universities use them alongside the SAT, not instead of it.

With that one caveat, I am entirely in agreement that school exit qualifications should and must double as tertiary entry qualifications. University entry requirements drive young people's lives as never before, as these chapters, for all their fascinating diversity, make clear. Universities themselves need to take more of an active part in ensuring that their demands, and their decision-making functions, help to promote both a broad education and the values to which higher education declares allegiance. For them, too, this volume should provide a wealth of positive examples, cautionary tales and practical advice.
