Introduction

Burmese folk tales have been preserved as part of a long folk tradition reflecting Burmese humour, romance, and wisdom. Before writing systems were developed, Burmese folk tales were handed down orally from generation to generation. Some of them have been collected and translated into English in order to further the appreciation of Burmese culture by English-speaking readers.

Burma, now officially known as the Union of Myanmar, is situated in Southeast Asia, sharing its border with China, Laos, Thailand, Bangladesh, India, and the Bay of Bengal. Due to border contact, immigration, or invasion in the early history of the nation, Burmese culture has been influenced by the cultures of these neighbouring countries.
