Principles of Citation and Transliteration

The Chinese sources used in this work, both primary and modern works, are listed under their authors’ names when available. Local gazetteers, genealogies, and other compiled works are listed by title. The characters for the Chinese and Japanese authors and sources are supplied in the bibliography. All translations from the Chinese texts are mine unless otherwise specified.

In citations of Chinese sources, numbers divided by a period (.) indicate the juan (chapter or part of the work) and the page for a particular edition of the work. Where modern annotated editions are available and consulted, the page number of the reprint is supplied instead.

All Chinese terms in this work are transliterated using the Hanyu pinyin system except in cases where the Wade-Giles system is more commonly accepted. This principle applies to titles of published works as well.

The bibliography contains only sources that are actually cited in the text. Many standard and essential research tools and dictionaries are not listed unless cited in the text.
