A survey of experts shows that they expect the Internet to continue to be a mostly positive influence on human intelligence, knowledge production, and social cooperation between now and 2020. They observe that social norms tied to concepts such as ‘privacy,’ and ‘friendship’ are being redefined in the evolving digital communications environment. They say innovation will continue to catch us by surprise. Some say online tools may improve traditional institutions, but many lament a lack of progress in the adoption of new networked communications applications by entrenched institutions. They disagree on whether the ability to create and browse online anonymously will continue to exist. While expressing the hope that the core values of the Internet’s founders continue to have influence, they note that control issues are driving a power struggle that endangers the openness of the network.
