Acknowledgments

The list of people that I am tasked with thanking is so long and extensive that I couldn’t possibly succeed in thanking all of the people who had a hand in this project. But, for purposes of familial and collegial harmony, I shall attempt to acknowledge a few extraordinary souls for their patience and help. Much of the research for this project was the result of my work as a doctoral student at the University of Pennsylvania, and so I would like to thank Linda Chance, Frederick Dickinson, and especially Cappy Hurst for their perseverance and guidance. I would also like to thank the staff and faculty at the Center for Non-Western Studies at Leiden University, where I spent a year as a graduate student and, later, three months as a visiting researcher in 2007. Special thanks are due Willem Boot and Ilona Beumer-Grill, who proved of enormous help to me during my stints in Leiden. Thanks are also in order to my colleagues in the history department at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Finally, I would like to thank Toni Tan and the staff at Cambria Press for their diligence and exemplary work in helping me publish my previous book, as well as this one.
