the staff of Cambria Press, including Toni Tan, who closely assisted me during the various stages of the manuscript’s preparation. I am also grateful to Paul Richardson who believed in this project from the beginning.
This volume gathers at least three generations of scholars who study slavery and its legacies in North America, South America, Africa, and Europe. The exchanges among all the authors were extremely exciting and fruitful. I wish to express my gratitude to those who agreed to participate in this project, in particular to Peter H. Wood, who honored us by presenting his paper in the workshop and agreed to publish his contribution in this book. I am deeply indebted to Howard University, which provided me with a very generous grant via the New Faculty Start-Up Program. The grant allowed me not only to organize and participate in the American Historical Association conference in San Diego but also to spend hundreds of hours editing the contributions in this volume. Without this financial support, it would have been impossible to finish this book. Finally, I am especially grateful to Alain Belanger, my lovely husband, who encouraged me to initiate and to complete this project by kindly giving me love and support throughout the time I have spent in front of my computer.
