courage, and resilience were an inspiration; my daughters, Daniella and Monique, for believing in me and urging me to persist when I was ready to give up; my son David, always available at crisis time, for providing the technical expertise that I lacked—drawing the charts, setting up databases, and deciphering statistics; and finally, my longsuffering husband Joe (Giusy) for his patience with me over the last few years. I valued his assistance in every domain, whether it was transcribing, printing, photocopying, or helping during my field trips.
