I decided to dedicate this work to the memory of
Dr Derek E. Hyde on hearing of his death in July 2010.
As my undergraduate college lecturer in music in the 1970s,
Derek was a man who incorporated an uncompromising spirit of integrity, something unusual in my experience at that time.
A gentle man of peace, a musician of great talent, sensitivity, and skill, he inspired and supported in equal measure. It was a privilege to be his student, and he became a lifelong friend, along with his family. His memory lives as an inspiration and continues to motivate those of us who knew him well.
