Acknowledgments

I want to recognize several people who either directly or otherwise helped to bring this book to completion. My wife, Sheila, gave me both the time holed up in my office (as did my kids, Max and Gabby) and the genuine encouragement necessary to complete the project. I am indebted to David Coffey in many ways. I met him during my first semester as a doctoral student at Marquette University and soon began to admire not only the content of his theology but its acute nuance and exquisite sophistication as well. He is tough but rewarding sledding. Over the years, he has been an important theological mentor and friend. His theology has profoundly shaped my own. He also read and commented on the manuscript. Nick Caric, my research assistant and doctoral student at McMaster Divinity College, provided vital help with editing the final version of the manuscript and tracking down resources. I want to thank my colleagues and the leadership at McMaster Divinity College who foster an invigorating academic context. Particular thanks go to Stan Porter (president)
