Just as the impact of the ocean waves was greater than that of my mark in the sand, so too is the impact of big business over education. One seems to predominate over the other—and hence control the other. In this book, I will attempt to explain the business discourse that is imprinted on educational fields. The idea is to not just present an abstract theory but to cause deep reflection that will motivate action. I will propose an education model that can be used in schools and universities; in many ways, it requires simply that people go back to the basics, with a little twist. My hope is that this book will highlight some of the taken-for-granted effects of at least one education reform effort—not just in America, but around the world. The ultimate goal is to cause those people who are in decision-making positions to rethink some of their agendas, as there may be unforeseen consequences to their actions that will affect not only those students who learn in schools and universities but also those businesses that engage educational institutions.
