A study of English cultural identity does not have to be written whilst its author is living and working at a castle in East Sussex, but it has certainly given focus to my thoughts that I am lucky enough to have been associated with one such place since 2006. I am most grateful to David Bevan and Bruce Stanley, executive directors at the Bader International Study Centre, Herstmonceux Castle, for the support that the institution has given me throughout the project.
