impromptu lectures on my latest theme and acquired still more 1930s travel books or Festival of Britain memorabilia on the grounds that such things “may come in useful.” I would particularly like to acknowledge my grandparents, Ruth, Gladys, George, and Edward, who lived through and experienced firsthand what is, to me, an area of largely academic interest. Like so many of their generation, they showed courage and fortitude in the direst of circumstances.

Above all, though, my greatest debt is to my wife, Shannon. We met shortly after I had started the research for this project, and we were married in the year that I completed it. Her unflagging interest, understanding, and encouragement have been a source of great support for me, particularly when the completion of this work seemed far off. Although words cannot fully do justice to her role in English Journeys, I can say that without her this book—like its author—would be a much poorer version of what it now is.
