The concepts of culture and ideology have been used often without definitional clarification. In order to examine the nature and role of juche in North Korea in a systematic way, one must begin with such an explanation.
Conceptual Clarifications
A culture is largely seen as a system of norms, values, and beliefs that characterizes the symbolic identity of a people. It is the affect system, as opposed to the cognition system, that is deeply imbedded in the people’s psychological predisposition and that determines their “personality,” or basic collective traits.
