Emeritus Professor an inspiring intellectual home. Hanna Söderbaum served as an enthusiastic, involved, and hardworking research assistant until she moved to the Department of Economic History for her PhD studies. Her job was taken up by my wife Barbro Lewin, MD, (in addition to her own research), whereby we resumed our cooperation of almost 50 years. Three old personal friends have been important for the study: Jan Eliasson, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, with whom I have discussed international politics ever since 1973 when we both worked in Washington DC; Hans Corell, former Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs of the United Nations; and Bo Ekman, the Chairman of the Tällberg Forum who invited me to present my forthcoming book to the Forum in July 2011, engaging former Prime Minister Ingvar Carlsson as my discussant. In March 2011, I had the opportunity to discuss my ideas at a meeting with the Swedish Network for European Studies in Political Science (SNES). I especially appreciate the fruitful collaboration with the Transdemos research project under the direction of Professor Christer Jönsson of Lund University and Professor Jonas Tallberg of Stockholm University during several meetings and conferences. In my own department in Uppsala, I have enjoyed discussions with Li Bennich-Björkman, Walter Carlsnaes, Sverker Gustavsson, Jörgen Hermansson, Jonas Hultin Rosenberg, and Anna Jarstad, as well as with Eva Erman and Sofia Näsström, two associates of the Transdemos project whom we have been lucky to recruit to Uppsala. Last but not least, I thank Peter Mayers who has transformed my text into idiomatic English.
