Notes

1. Republic Steel merged with LTV Steel in 1964 and used the name LTV Steel until 1989, when the company was renamed Republic Engineered Steels. In 2011, the international company then renamed itself back to Republic Steel. However, the company is consistently referred to as LTV/Republic Steel both in newspaper articles and by city officials even to present day, and this is the only name most residents would know the corporation by, regardless of its legal name at any given time.
2. Initial reports of the contamination problems were released to The Buffalo News and local television channels. Each public event that was held during the 18 months received media coverage. The media time line offers the perspective of what the general public saw regarding the situation in Hickory Woods.
3. At this first meeting, the group decided to adopt an official name. Attendees also elected officers: on president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and block captains. Nominations were called for at the beginning of the meeting. Subsequent chapters address the complexity of the organization’s role in mobilization of the community.
4. Lois Gibbs was the president of the Love Canal Homeowners’ Association in Niagara Falls, New York. Niagara Falls is located about 20 miles upriver from Buffalo. Gibbs is currently director of the Center for Health, Environment, and Justice. The goal of this organization is to provide communities facing environmental contamination with the strategic tools necessary to resolve the problems.
5. The ESI was formed to work with Western New York communities facing environmental problems. It is an interdisciplinary institute that includes university professors from such fields as anthropology, sociology, chemistry, geography, and epidemiology.
