In the final analysis, of course, I can reach no definitive conclusion as to why Lu Xun’s texts have had so strong an impact on me. The human heart, even one’s own, finally remains a mystery. Nevertheless, this book is the result of that process of inquiry and the best answer I can give to my wonderment about the capacity of these short stories to touch me so profoundly.
