mentors from my graduate student days, provided constant reminders of scholarly excellence even though our contact became less frequent over time. John Kieschnick was kind enough to assign the manuscript to his graduate seminar at Stanford University, and I have benefitted from the comments he sent as a result. Dan Stephenson offered timely encouragement, as did many, many others. I remain grateful to all of you. My wife, Elizabeth, was with me “in the beginning” when I started to work on the project in Tokyo so many years ago, and has provided the constant support and encouragement that has made the journey not only possible but eminently enjoyable. My daughter, Maeve, joined us along the way, and even at her tender age, has proven to be a consummate editor and proof reader. I am also indebted to the manuscript reviewers for pointing out errors, both major and minor, that have substantially improved the final version. Last, but certainly not least, I am greatly indebted to the team at Cambria Press, especially Toni Tan and David Armstrong, whose enthusiasm for the project was so great. Errors that remain are solely my own.
